Not really: There are dozens of strains of HPV, but the ones associated with genital warts or cancer are not passed that way.They appear to require direct contact from one infected surface to another to  transfer and do so to specific recipient tissues, not the rough and thick skin of the hand.

Which type ?: I believe there are in excess of 100 strains of HPV.This includes a common wart strain. There are 2-4 strains associated only with genital warts &amp; 7 or more genital strains associated with cervical/oral &amp; anal cancer. Once exposed at any point in life you can carry antibodies to specific strains for life. Strains are tissue specific, living only in the tissues they are known for.

No: Hpv is not as contagious as other sexually transmitted diseases (chlamydia, herpes, etc)  it can still be transmitted from one partner to another, however.  The best way to prevent transmission is using a condom.

: There always have been such fears, and some people with genital warts claim that's how they caught HPV. However, there has never been a proved case that it actually happens. Household contacts of infected people never get HIV, even after years of sharing toilets, towels, and even clothing. Warts can appear years after being infected, contributing to misunderstanding of how they were infected.

Herpes ?'s: Herpes can be transmitted onto any mucosal surface, including tissues surrounding your eyes.  Whenever kissing or genital exposure occurs, with an infected individual, herpes can be transmitted by not washing one's hands.

Not likely, but...: The hpv virus is very easily transmitted from person to person. Fingers, mouths, sharing sex toys without washing in between are all thought to be ways of transmitting hpv.

Very rare: The troublesome strains of HPV that cause cancer of the penis and cervix are unlikely to be transmitted except by sex -- they're adapted for this. Everybody has a few strains of non-genital HPV. I'm sorry that fearmongers try to keep us from touching each other because of this. It's a good idea to wash hands before doing food preparation -- actually basic courtesy more than staph control.
