Physician visit: Lymph node swelling has many causes, including inflammation and infection. 
I would recommend a complete blood count, ESR and CRP. 
In addition, the node may require a biopsy.

Lymph system cancer: Nhl is a large group of related cancers which originate in the lymph tissues of the body. These cells normally help fight infection but become cancerous and grow out of control. They may stay in the lymph nodes or also be found in any part of the body or organs. Some grow slowly (indolent) while others are more aggressive. You doctor will run a series of test to stage and type the lymphoma.

Very difficult: The basic chemo drugs used to treat hodgkin lymphoma (adriamycin, bleomycin, vinblastine, dacarbazine) are old and cheap but the tests and infusion time with nurses and the md visits are expensive. On the other hand these drugs have a very high cure rate even for stage 4 patients. Using anything else would be unconscionable.

Treatment is initiated based on stage, type, age, organ function, etc. Treatment ranges from chemotherapy, radiotherapy, bone marro transplant or in some cases observation.

Spread pattern: Primarily,  hodgkins lymphoma teens to spread from one lymph node site to an adjacent site.  Non hodgkins lymphoma is more likely to skip lymph node chains to spread distantly.  This is why local radiation has historically be more important in the treatment of hodgkins than non hodgkins.
