why is my tongue yellow and sore? what causes this?

Enlarged papillae?: Usually yellow tongue is caused by enlarged tiny projections on the surface of your tongue which are inhabited by bacteria which produce yellow pigments. It is a harmless condition. If however the whites of your eyes are yellow as well you may have jaundice and should see your physician as soon as you are able. If you are unsure, it is always better to have a clinical examination.

Say Ahh: Sore throats have many causes. It would be helpful to know if your tongue is sore or sensitive or tender to movement, or touch, or if the surface is patchy or the same all around. Most sore throats/mouths are due to viral causes, and will resolve on their own. Dry mouth is an often overlooked cause. Strep bacterial infection is another. Acid reflux, and reaction to acid and spicy food.

Viral: It could bea virus.  If  your symptoms do not resolve the see your doctor.
Brush your tongue to get rid of the yellow coating.  Your breath will be fresher also.

Need to see someone: There should be culture of your throat performed and start you on antibiotics if the doctor see active lesions. Check yourself for fever as well.

Rash, sore throat: Herpes is typically painful. Onset of HIV is more likely to have flu-like symptoms, but it does show up with all sorts of symptoms. Please see your doctor or health department for comprehensive STI testing and prevention, just as a general precaution.  Your symptoms are probably due to something more common, could be strep. Please have strep test, too.

Right pharynx absces: Pharyngeal abscess. You need antibiotics, likely  and follow up to make sure it is not retropharyngeal abscess. Rarely could be sore of autoimmune disease that was infected but would  need labs . Follow up with doc/urgetn care
