Black toe nail: The only serious problem you could have, that gives a black toe nail, would be a malignant melanoma on the nail bed beneath the nail. A bruised nail turns red, and then dark, and then resolves after a period of time, as the nail grows out. It may take more than 3 months for a bruised  big toe nail to grow out, so it may pay to be patient and wait, or visit a dermatologist right away for help.

6 months: Toenails take nearly 9 months to grow from back to front, so if the injury happened 3 months ago, you still have a half year until the bruise underneath completely resolves, assuming it started at the very back of the nail.

THANK : Thank you for providing a photograph!  when dealing with such issues, it's tremendously helpful.

If your toenail turned blue suddenly (not slowly over the course of weeks or months), based on the picture, i would agree with you that it is blood trapped under the nail plate.

Our nails pick up their color from the underlying skin.  If you squeeze the end of your finger to blanch the skin white, you'll also notice the nail appears white as well because the color of the nail is reflective of the color of whatever is underneath the nail.

What probably happened was you broke a tiny little blood vessel and the blood had nowhere to go, so it accumulated under the nail plate and that's where it will stay until it slowly grows out with the nail over time.  If this is the first time something like this has happened, i wouldn't be alarmed or pursue it unless it becomes painful or doesn't grow out with the nail over time.

If this is a recurrent phenomenon, it would be prudent to determine just why your capillaries under the nail are so fragile as to break (unless you can recall some sort of trauma).  You're allowed this one time event without further work-up, though.

If you decide to paint your nails to cover it up (which is ok to do), it's important to remove the nail polish every couple of weeks and see what's going on down there.

It's possible: If blood forms under rthe nail it could cause the nail to lift frm the bed and fall off. One possible solution is to drain the blood if present rapidly.....Just becasue the is discoloration does not mean there is drainable blood though.....

Depends: The toenail will usually only come off it there is blood under the nail.  If the blood is not released then the pressure will separate the nail from the nail bed and the nail will peel off.

Get checked : Most likely you stunned it without knowing but there are some nasty things that can develop out of nothing. Best to get seen so an MD can evaluate it.

It could also be a wart that has formed under the nail
see a podiatrist.

Bruise: A bruise to the nail area usually results in blood from the bruise staining the nail itself.  This takes time to resolve.  As the average human big toenail takes 9 to 12 months to grow all the way out  .  See your podiatrist for any problems.
