Did : Did you suffer a prolonged period of erection prior to this? (4 hours or longer). Is the entire penis turning black (or just specific areas)?  Swelling? Itching?  Pain?  Do you have any general medical conditions (i.e., like diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease)?  Does this appear to be a rash, or simply discoloration? Any history of std's?

Here are some ...: Despite not hurting at peeing, still need to confirm if he has UTI with urinalysis. Meanwhile, check if the foreskin is inflamed. But bringing him to see urologist timely is still most important. Before doing so, collect the information on the onset, degree, duration, interval, evolution, progress of all Sx over time for Doc to analyze + physicals + tests as needed so to deduce possible Dx for Rx.

See his doctor: Can't even guess what the problem might be. If he has been sexually active, STDs obviouly are a concern and might be what he fears. No matter the cause, he obviously needs to see his pediatrician. How fortunate your son is OK speaking with you about it! Be sensitive and caring, and assure him he may see the doctor without telling you more, and without you being present.

Leave it alone: Normal boys are sensitive about having their foreskin pulled back. Most foreskins separate on their own as time goes go by. He likely has what is called "physiologic phimosis" with normal attachment of foreskin to head of penis plus a somewhat narrow opening. Discuss with your pediatrician if foreskin opening is only pinhole in size, or if foreskin balloons or is painful with urination.

A few possibilities: It could be an insect bite or just an irritation from his clothing rubbing against his penis. Another possibility is that some smegma (skin cells and oil) built up under the edge of the foreskin (if he is circumcised) and caused some irritation. Keep it clean. Apply a triple-antibiotic ointment. See your doctor if it isn't better in a few days.

Cause and effect...: Is you son circumcised?  Does he complaint of pain when he pees?  Has he had this before?  It is hard to be specific about what this is without more info.  I doubt it is related to swimming.  In the short term you can use and antibiotic ointment/cream 3 or 4 times per day.  If this doesn't help you should see a pediatrician or gp.

my 7 yr old son has poison ivy and severe swelling  and pain on his penis. is this normal and is there anything i can do besides prednisone?

Maybe: This is very itchy and painful. The swelling and pain will start to go down within 24 hours with the prednisone. I find cool witch hazel soaks help to make it feel more comfortable.
