Thin meniscus: yes physio or home exercises could help in trying to keep the muscles around your knee strong--that will help off load any further damage to the knee.  Keeping your thigh muscles strong prevent progression of arthritis.

while going down the stairs, my knee slid down two steps. i had to walk home, my knee hurts when i bend it, go up the stairs, and when i sit down. i put an ice pack and my ankle hurts too. what can i do? how do i know if it's a serious injury?

Many possibilities: In the absence of a trauma/injury, then abnormal tracking of the kneecap, called patellofemoral syndrome would be the most common cause of your pain. Cartilage problems (meniscus tear or osteochondral injury) would be other considerations. Finally, tendonitis of various tendons is another thought. Go see PCP: Your symptoms of pain, swelling, tenderness, and decreased range of motion are suggestive of inflammation. It can be as benign as a tendinitis if you recently did some strenuous exercising, or more serious if you are having fevers (it can be sign of infection or gout).

Sometimes, you can have a hamstring tendonitis or smaller ligament inury as well. See your sports medicine doc, primary care, or ortho if it gets worse or you've had it for awhile.
