Yes: If the murmur is a vsd it would show up on echo.Echo is so sensitive it would pick up a vsd or other defect even if it were not heard.There are many vibratory murmurs that are benign, with no defect involved.

This is very common to see and normal not to hear on physical exam. In young patients like yourself who are otherwise healthy with no symptoms of heart disease, there is no need to worry.

Proximity: In expiration less air is in the lungs moving the heart and great vessels closer to the chest wall and therefore the stethoscope. This makes the murmurs louder and easier to hear.

Yes...: A murmur is an extra sound we hear when we listen to the heart.  We hear a swooshing sound and not just the basic lub-dub.  
The "murmur" is that extra sound and comes from the same principle as why you hear a sound when a garden hose is kinked or why you hear sound in the faucet when you turn it on.

Doesn't sound bad: Lots of people have heart murmurs.  This doesn't mean there is anything wrong with you or your heart.  If you are really concerned you could get an echo, (an ultrasound of the heart) but that seems unnecessary from the information provided.  I would not worry about this, just like your doctor told you.

Cold: I am more concerned about what you are hearing in your chest, if you hear a whistle, you need to see your doctor for an inhaler. The foods you eat will not affect anything in treating your cold.
