Stool mucus or more?: Mucus discharge occurs in up to 50% of patients with irritable bowel syndrome, with or without pain. Mucus may also be produced in response to partial obstruction, chronic constipation, rectal dysfunction, infection, & even from secretory villous tumors of the rectum. At the very least stool studies should help address if mucus white bits you're seeing are "worms" (pinworms, etc.) so rx can begin.

No: A stools color is generally due to the bile added to the poo as it travels through the digestive process. If it moves through quickly, it is more likely a shade of bilious green, slower a yellow & if it has time for gut bacteria to change it further it will be a brown. Baby poo is expected to range well within this green to brown color palate.

Rectal bleeding: There can be many sources of rectal bleeding and mucous in the stool. You may have some sort of inflammation, such as colitis, or could even have a polyp or tumor.   You should see a gastroenterologist ASAP. Good luck.

Blood in baby's poop: There are a variety of causes. If he/she is breastfeeding and mom has cracked nipples, baby can swallow blood and pass it through. If he/she is having constipation or bad diarrhea, the anus can end up with a small tear that can bleed. Very rarely, a baby can have a food allergy to milk or soy.  More rarely, a baby can have meckel's diverticulum - a side passage off the intestine. See your doctor!

Change in bowels: The color of stool varies with foods, speed of emptying of the GI tract, medications & supplements ingested, gut flora (unique for each individual), additives (like blood), subtractions (like absent bile), infection/exposures, inflammation, & other factors. Since your bowel pattern has changed & persists, testing is in order. Please see your doctor to facilitate exam and treatment.
