Not recommended: The DM component is not recommended for children under 12 years of age. Plain mucinex to loosen mucus is recommended for them.

Should be ok: This is one reason the government advises against using cough and cold medicines in young children. The benefits are small, and sometimes kids get too much medicine. That said, a one-time double dose of such medications should be ok if the child does not take another dose for the next 12-24 hours. Temporarily, antihistamines may cause drowsiness, and decongestants may have a caffeine-like effect.

Mucinex (guaifenesin) D: Two tablets with the Pseudoephedrine will make you feel a little jumpy or may make the heart beat a little more than normal. The Mucinex (guaifenesin) by itself will only cause a headache or a stomach ache.   Feel better.

Read below: For an adult taking Mucinex (guaifenesin) dm the max dose is 4 tablets in 24 hours.   Ideally you take it 1-2 tablets every 12 hours.  To maximize its effectiveness, you should drink plenty of water.  If it is Mucinex (guaifenesin) dm maximum strength then max dose is 2 tabs/24 hours  by taking 1 tab every 12 hours.

Yes: Yes, a short course of dextromethorphan/guaifenasin with azithromycin for I'm assuming a bacterial respiratory infection is appropriate for a type 1 diabetic.  Depending on what other medications you are taking though, it is prudent to ask your doc or pharmacist about potential interactions.
