what happens during a chest mri or ct?

Computerized section: Both  MRI and ct mean getting sections of your body  with the aid of computer.  Only difference is in "how".
Ct uses x-rays and MRI uses radiowaves in a magnetic field.
You lay still inside a machine which lookd like a short tunnel (gantry) and these enregies (x-rays or radiowaves)  go through your body and records the density of your tissue.  The computer analyzes the density and display image.

That depends : That would depend on what one was looking for.  For most instances, ct is better, inspire of the radiation.  Just keep the number of these tests to what is really  needed.

Muscle issue?: This could be the result of your muscles being weak from having carried the excess weight around for years and now they are being asked to focus on other areas of movement.  Strengthening your back and core muscles could possibly help but i would recommend possibly seeing a physical therapist who might be able to better evaluate the musculoskeletal system. Yes: MRI can easily detect differences in soft tissue structure so that lymph nodes are easily identified. CAT scan can show organ structures easily and the amount of radiation with the newer units is minimal.

Chest ct is better at evaluating the lungs.
