Floaters: Floaters are old cells some embryonic that are in the liquid of the eye.  These are usually not pathologic but can be evaluated by an Ophthalmologist.  If interfering with vision seek apt right away.  If vision is good these will become ignored.

Early warning: Central vision is for fine detail - reading, face recognition, etc.  Peripheral vision, of low acuity, is sensitive to motion and serves to provide early warning of threats from the sides and also provides orientation to the major features of the visual space.  With no peripheral vision (called tunnel vision) you cannot drive, or easily walk around, etc.

Migraine??: The big issue is whether it is a transient or permanent problem. Regardless, a full exam with visual field testing should help you sort out the possible cause. Migraine is most common transient type. In elderly patients you also have to assess for insufficient ocular blood flow (amarosis).

Central vision: The opposite is the vision from the fovea and macular area which is the central, sharp vision that you use to read with and recognize small objects and faces.

Shaking of retina: The retina only has nerves of vision and if something shakes it, you will notice a light streak.  This can happen occasionally spontaneously. And also in relationship to the aging of the vitreous within the eye.  If the light streaks happen one after another even with the eyes shut, then you should have an evaluation to rule out more serious conditions.

Mult reasons: Either: 1. They don't cover your eyes completely, or. 2. The refraction isn't completely around the edge (doubt).

Peripheral vision: While this can be normal if it happens for a few minutes at the end of extreme exercise, most of the time it is abnormal. Serious conditions like glaucoma and retinal detachment can cause this. See a specialist eye MD and get checked out.

Depends: It could be a type of a migraine headache even if you do not experience the pain.  I would however have it checked out by your doctor. Does aleve, (naproxen) aspirin, excedrine or Ibuprofen help?

Accepted Answer

Occipital migraine: In this type of migraine, there is a loss of a portion  up to all of the vision of 1/2 of the field of vision of both eyes (check by covering one eye and then the other). Usually the greyed out loss has a shimmering surround which flickers until it disappears.  These type of migraines are benign, short lasting (usually less than an hour), and cause no permanent change.  No worry unless frequent.
