my mother says she has strong emotional rushes and her life flashes before her eyes and feels like a star is bursting inside of her, is this a mental disorder?

Accepted Answer

Needs to see doctor : We  need more information to be able to answer this. Given these symptoms she needs a good neurologic exam, good eye exam and an assessment of her hormonal status.

my 68 yr old mother in law has sudden onset flashing,  zig zagging lights in left eye. no prior history of migraine or stroke, no high bp or any other conditions,  not on medication, no other symptoms. under a lot of stress. er or can it wait ?

Eye exam or ER: If a new vision symptom pops up, one should see her primary care doctor and/or an ophthalmologist (MD eye doctor). Vision is vitally important, so it is good to have a doctor get the whole story and examine the eyes. That said, sudden onset flashing and zigzag lights in an elderly person means an Ophthalmologist exam right away (may need to go through the ER) to make sure the retina is still ok.

A common notion: The actual eyes do not change with emotional conditions.  However the facial expression and tear flow can be changed and with these clues, some degree of emotional pain can be identified.

Eyes: May be allergic, from medications or from tear duct issues. Suggest she see an ophthalmologist

Accepted Answer

Could be dry eyes: Seems contradictory, but she may have dry eyes. Tearing eyes maybe a result , also of blocekd tear ducts, allergies or an infection. Have her examined by an opthamologist to determine the etiology, but you can try an otc solution for  dry eyes  while waiting for her appointment.

i am unable to cry and get emotional. it is due to my dry eyes or some other problem?

Two issues here...: The inability to cry could technically be an anatomic or medical anomaly, but the inability to "get emotional" as a cause of the inability to cry suggests an emotional disorder as a cause.  Counseling may help you to determine what's blocking your emotionality.

my mother  has had tias.. he has lost the sight in his eyes temprorarily. what should we do?

Time heals...: Unfortunately, there is no treatment when vision is damaged by tia's or strokes. Sometimes vision can improve over the course of 6-12 months after the stroke. See an eye doctor to make sure that this is the only cause of the problem.

i have very noticeable blue ring in the whites of my eyes. my mother and sister have the same issue.

Osteogenesis Imperfe: Blue in the whites of the eyes is, common in collagen disorders most notably Osteogenesis Imperfecti.  Generally people with this have multiple fractures in there life even without trauma.  It may be that you have the recessive form that has few fractures but has the blue sclera.

i'm concerned about my mother. she looks like her eyes are bulging compared to pictures 7 years ago?

Accepted Answer

Check it out: Take her to an eye doctor to check this out and take the old pictures with you. Bulging of both eyes can be a sign of changes in the function of the thyroid gland. Bulging of one eye only can be caused by various other things including growths behind the eye.
