Depends: I doubt that any one has actually compiled this number.  First what are pills:  medication only, supplements. Over the counter medication?  And of course this will be influenced by the sex, and the geographic location and the presence of underlying disease..  There probably is no studied answer but in first world countries it must be in the 10's of thousands.

Majority: All chronic diseases are treatable, but not curable. Mostly infections are curable, not all having specific treatments.

Probably yes: But how many is too many depends on what problems you are having.  If you just had a complicated cancer surgery, you could have had a couple before surgery and another after surgery when you have healed well.  If you have bleeding from abnormal blood vessels, they might need to look again.  If you have scores of polyps they might need to scope a couple times to get all. Best to ask dr. Why again?

Sometimes people: Are overwhelmed & don't see other available option to handle their situation. Some have significant mental health disorders that can lead to depression or vulnerability to losses or stress. There is cruelty in the world but also beauty, wonder and joy.
