Skip it: If infection is ever suspected, it is prudent to hold Methotrexate until the infection has completely resolved.

i take methotrexate and orencia (abatacept) my ra. i have a cold (mucus, dry cough, sore throat). what over the counter meds can i take? dayquil? any others?.

No contraindication: to the OTC cold medicines mentioned. Whether they work or not is another issue. I find that inhaling warm steam for a few minutes 2x daily for 3 days may help hasten recovery.

Mucositis?: These don&#x27;t sound like symptoms of sinusitis. Maybe viral pharyngitis. But you may be on the right track, i.e. oral mucositis (inflammation of mucous membranes of the mouth), a well known side effect of many chemotherapeutic drugs, including methotrexate. Discuss with the doctor who prescribed it.

Maybe antibiotics: Sore throat can be caused by virus or bacteria.  I would recommend that you see a doctor and get a rapid strep and culture.  If it is strep, you will need a prescription for an antibiotic.  In the meantime there are lots of soothing otc lozenges for relief of pain.  Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin also help with the pain.

It depends: Many sore throats are viral and will go away without treatment.  Gargle with warm salt water several times a day and eat ice cream or drink cold drinks for comfort.  You can find some lozenges that will numb the throat but they will also numb the tongue, which some people don't like.  If you also have a fever, headache,  bad breath, or swollen glands in your neck, you should be checked.

OTC pain meds: Many people think in terms of a gargle but Ibuprofen is pretty good at pain relief & should help your throat. Tylenol (acetaminophen) comes in a liquid for people who's sore throat makes it hard to swallow pills.

A couple days of throat lozenges and tylenol (acetaminophen) can decrease throat pain.

Sore throat: For significant sore throat with swollen tonsils / lymph nodes –  see physician & get a strep throat test/ culture. If you have strep throat, antibiotic therapy is imperative to prevent future complications. Consider tylenol (acetaminophen) or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Saltwater gargles: mix 1 tsp salt in 8 oz warm water – gargle several times a day. Or gargle with aloe vera juice twice a day.
