Disease mod med: Methotrexate (mtx) is used for a variety of conditions. In rheumatology mtx is most commonly used to treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA) . We use 10-25 mg given once weekly for ra. Mtx treats symptoms (pain) but also prevents joint damage and disability in ra. The main side effects: fatigue, some hair loss,  and  upset stomach. We monitor blood counts and liver tests every 2-3 months.

Should be safe: Interaction is unlikely to be a problem unless possibly increased drowsiness, but most people should not drive or operate equipment with Benadryl anyway.

Accepted Answer

Yes, good for many: Low dose weekly Methotrexate is an excellent and safe drug (as long as you don't drink alcohol) that is useful for treating a number of autoimmune diseases either alone or combination with other drugs. I sometimes use it in kids with an autoimmune disease where the exact diagnosis is not clear since it is excellent for long term control of inflammation without the use of steroids. Talk to your doc.

Ask for injectable: Mtx tabs are 2.5mg.  Taken orally, they are in the gut @600x that will be in the blood strea.  Absorption is variable-40-90%.  Then to the liver which sees 400x that which will be diluted out.  None of these are significant issues when given by a weekly subcutaneous injection. Mtx is a valuable drug for inflammatory arthritis, psoriasis, and many autoimmune diseases. I only gibe it subcu!
