can certain medications cause hot flashes? i am not anywhere close to menopause.  could any medications be responsible for my recent hot flashes?

Yes other causes: There are other causes including medications. Hot flashes can be a side effect of  food additive mono-sodium glutamate (msg), or of Nifedipine (procardia, adalat), Niacin (numerous brand names), antibiotics: vancomycin, gemifloxacin and lomefloxacin.
Calcitonin and headache medicines topiramate and maxalt (rizatriptan). Thyroid disease, hidden infection ( like tb) and some cancers can also cause hot flashes.

i am post menopausal (57) but have recently been feeling the strained discomfort i used to feel when ovulating. what causes this? is something wrong?

Could be: Constipation especially if you have round or hard stools or are straining. If not see your doc for a pelvic if you have not had one recently

Postmenopausal sx: Postmenopausal symptoms may disappear by themselves.  Othewise other medications may be prescribed...Clonidine, ssris. Check what our gyns have to say.

Not sure of the ?: You should resubmit in a shorter form. Weight gain is common after both menopause and stopping smoking (congrats!) but is usually 5-10 lbs. If you have gained considerable weight, this is not healthy for you, and diet and exercise should be the starting point. Many medications that cause weight gain may have alternatives that have less of that. Talk to your doctor about that and about weight loss.

Hair problem: You need a good metabolic evaluation. Iron deficiency is very common and could result in the problem you have. Of course, the character of your hair will change as you age, but what you're describing needs further evaluation.

Nutrition ?: Adding coconut oil and flax seed to your daily diet will have no effect from your age (46 ) or on the onset of menopause. Although the average for menopause is 54 or so, statistically, menses may not be regular over 40, as the ovaries require more stimulation to ovulate, which delays periods accordingly.

Most likely muscle: Although women can have atypical symptoms for serious problems like a heart attack, the most likely causes would be muscle ache or even heartburn, but it it's a significant pain, or associated with sweating, tingling, shortness of breath, or irregular heart beats, you should see a dr asap.
