Cough and runnig: Stuffiness runny nose, low grade fever, post-nasal drip, and cough;the cough is usually dry , with post-nasal drip, the cough may bring up some of the nasal secretions that have dripped into the back of the throat; and sinusitis symptoms such as fullness in the face, increased nasal drainage, and occasionally pain and fever.

Try your native herb: Most such infections are viral and thus antibiotics usually don't help. One of my favorite treatments for URI's and sinusitis is a herb native to South African, pelargonium sidoides, used as a folk remedy for many generations and now proven effective by research. It's sold under the name Umcka in the US, don't know how it's sold in its native country!

i have an upper airway infection that came back after completing antibiotics. i am now on a second course, 4 days in with little improvement. is this because i have a weak immune system or has the infection become resistant to the medication?

Symptoms: If you are producing sputum, it may be analyzed to determine the type of bacterial infection that you have and the resistance pattern. A fever and continued sputum production indicate that the infection is not well controlled. A chest imaging study may be obtained when you see your physician. Rest, drink fluids and use nasal saline spray.

Anti-fungals: Several - for instance diflucan (fluconazole).  Also oral Mycelex troches for gargling.

Chronic?: There are really no chronic viral infections of the throat, although some like Epstein-Barr virus can be excreted in the saliva on and off without symptoms

Accepted Answer

Infections: Usually require antibiotics to treat. If you are having drainage, sore throat, etc. taking any over the counter sinus cold &amp; flu meds may give you some relief but if it is truly an infection they will mask the symptoms. It is best to see you MD or a Nurse Practitioner to check for infection and give you antibiotics if indicated.

Vomiting: Not normal.  Go back to your paediatrician to discuss.

Strep Throat: Untreated, strep throat can move to your heart and cause damage.  This is an infection that should not be ignored.  There are no home remedies for strep throat.

im currently on amoxicillin for a throat infection and i keep getting waves of nausea that im pretty sure is caused by the medicine. is there anything i can do to help this?

Accepted Answer

Not unusual : Needed antibiotic can cause GI adverse events.  Might ingest small amount of food about half hour prior to taking.  Preferable to adding anti nausea Rx.  OTC ginger root may work. Try it!
