Polytar (coal tar): I would answer no.  Polytar (coal tar) is an irritant and areas close to mucous membranes would be very sensitive.  You would never want to get it in your eyes, nose or mouth.  Some believe that a case can me made that it is a carcinogen.

Many options: Sooner or later your scalp will get used to the tar shampoo - or you will get tired of smelling like you got dipped in creosote - so get several therapeutic shampoos and rotate them. Other good active ingredients are zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, and salicylic acid.

For dry scalp or...: For psoriasis, seborrhea, and bad dandruff, i'd take the polytar (coal tar). For dry scalp alone, i'd take the oilatum.  Both can be used on different days.

Accepted Answer

Not really.: Tar products are sometimes helpful when used as a supplement to more basic treatments, such as topical corticosteroids, vitamin d derivatives, and uv light. But by itself, tar soap is ineffective in all but the very mildest cases.

Define "inflamed".: If you mean that there is an active infection in your scalp, i would seek treatment from your doctor or a dermatologist first. If you mean inflammation due to psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis, that's what polytar (coal tar) is for.

Stop taking it: If it is an extreme necessity, and there are no alternatives, and you don&#x27;t know whether this an allergic reaction or an adverse drug reaction (side effect), see an allergist/immunologist for evaluation and possible desensitization to the said drug for treatment of a particular disease episode, good luck

Various Options: Daily steroid or antihistamines nasal sprays (fluticasone, azelastine) are helpful. Determining exactly what you could be sensitized to in order to practice appropriate avoidance measures is also important. If medications and avoidance are not effective or not feasible allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots) could be an option as well. Other meds include Sudafed, Mucinex, (guaifenesin) Afrin, oral antihistamines

Could be!: Without understanding the circumstances and the type of reaction, it is impossible to answer the question. If you started the new medicine, and experienced a reaction, it could be due to allergy to the medication.

No cure yet, but...: Allergy shots (allergen immunotherapy) is currently the only treatment that is disease modifiying, meaning it can change how the body responds to exposure to allergens.  It is "natural" and long lasting effects carry on after shots are stopped. It works for most, but not all people.  Closest thing to a cure so far.....
