Several or none: Early stages may have no symptoms at all. As the fibrosis progresses, symptoms develop based on the structure involved. More commonly the superior vena cava is compressed and can lead to engorged neck veins, head and/or arm swelling and headaches. If the trachea or main bronchi are compressed there may be difficulty breathing. If the esophagus is compressed, then there is difficulty swallowing.

After heart surgery if an infection develops in the chest incision site which progresses deep to the bone and into the area below the bone we call this mediastinitis.  This is a terrible complication but fortunately happens very rarely.  Mediastinitis can also refer to chronic inflammation in the mediastinum (the area in the chest between the lungs.

Find cause: Chronic fibrosing mediastinitis is characterized by diffuse fibroisis in the mediastinum usually seen on chest xray.  It is not very common but occurs as a complication of some infections which tend to cause granulomas in the lung and mediastinum including histoplasmosis and tuberculosis.  Radiation therapy can also cause fibroisng mediastinitis.
