Need to know actual: Results. If your hemoglobin and red cell count are normal, nothing may need to be done. All lab results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the test is usually in the best position to do that.

No: MCH (mean corpuscular hemoglobin) and MCHC (MCH concentration) are often abnormal when other parameters of red cells are abnormal.  As isolated abnormalities, they have virtually no diagnostic significance.

No worries: If your Hemoglobin(Hgb) is normal, then you do not need to worry about red cell indices(size of the cells and volume(MCV etc)). These parameters are only important in finding the cause of Anemia (low Hgb)  if someone is Anemic. So you do not need to worry about these items.

Big picture : Small red cells with too little hemoglobin usually mean iron deficiency which should prompt a search for bleeding. There are some other possible causes.

Find the cause: If you have thalassemia minor, it's a problem only if you are considering becoming a parent with someone who is also affected. If you have iron deficiency, you need to find the cause -- anything from heavy periods to non-supplementing vegetarianism to stomach ulcer / colon cancer.

Stop worrying: You may have a very mild thalassemia variant. Reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthy folks fall outside on either end. Ask your physician whether you have "thal minor" -- simply so that you'll know in case you are thinking of marrying someone else with it.

Thal, right?: I see you have mild alpha-thal. This is a non-problem if you're not anemic. Different people have different capacities for endurance training / super-fitness, but as a mature adult, for you the fun is taking part rather than competing with the 18 year olds. Make your body do what it's willing to, and enjoy yourself.

Thal minor?: You did not give specific numbers but this is common is thalassemia minor, with red cells too small being produced in generous quantities to make up for their smallish size. It's worth knowing about because marrying someone else with it can produce children with thal major which is very bad.

Blood count: Need numbers to further assess this. The low neutrophils sometimes can go with some mild immunodeficineces. Unlikely these numbers to be correlated with the rapid weight gain. Should have further lab work, like thyroids, etc to further assess the weight gain.

hi. i recently found out i'm pregnant and had my labs drawn. my mch and mchc were slightly elevated and my rdw was slighlty low. what could this mean?

Sphereocytoses: Sphereocytoses  is an  rbc product that has a greatter  volume than normal rbcs, consequently its size is smaller but the MCH and MCHC  elevations are consistent with a spherocyte which is more like a ball than a checker which explains the difference in volume.
