See your doctor.: How to gradually get off laxatives will depend largely on why you are constipated in the first place. This will take a good history and physical and perhaps some tests. You should make an appointment to see a gastroenterologist soon. In the meantime you could start adding fiber to your diet and maybe even add a fiber supplement such as Metamucil once a day with extra liquids. Good luck.

Laxative overuse: Try using Miralax (polyethylene glycol) daily and taking in more fiber, fluids, and exercising more. Metamucil is a good source of psyllium fiber and inexpensive. 24 a day is an excessive amount of laxatives.  It is time to consult with a gastroenterology specialist and have a blood test to rule out hypothyroidism, which can cause consitpation.

Ask your doc to help: It really would be best at this point if you could get your personal doctor to help you out.  By this point, it's quite possible your blood chemicals (electrolytes) are quite out of whack, and suddenly making changes now could cause life-threatening imbalances.  These can be very serious, causing seizures, heart arrhythmias amongst other side effects.  Have a doctor guide you through this slowly.
