Many causes: There are many causes for erectile dysfunction, both physical and mental. Medication, diabetes, heart disease, tobacco and alcohol as well as anxiety and depression are common. Check w/a doctor.

No: Erectile dysfunction (ed) is not painful. It is simply the inability to obtain or maintain an erection sufficient enough for sexual intercourse. There is a condition called peyronie's which is scarring of the chambers of the penis which can lead to bending or curvature of the penis and this can be painful but it is a seperate condition from ed.

Not an easy answer: Erectile dysfunction can have many causes.
Many of our treatments address the symptom and not the cause.
As i tell my patients "the penis is the barameter of the health of the vascular system"
unfortunately many health care providers(hcp) do not make that connection.

Time to see a doctor: To assess if a person's erections have weakened, he should visit a primary doctor, who can check for possible causes: stress, depression, diabetes, high blood pressure, low testosterone, artery disease, high cholesterol, smoking, older age, etc... Causes found can be treated to help make erections stronger, firmer, longer lasting. For a guy in his 20's, a psychologist and urologist may also help.

Depends : It depends what you mean. Many boys expect themselves to be sexual athletes like the porn actors they see on the internet and think if their sexual responses are not as quick, intense or sustained that something is wrong. This is a vicious circle because anxiety  is the most common cause of erectile dysfunction in physically healthy men.

Erectile dysfunction or impotence refers to an inability to obtain and/or maintain an erection satisfactory for sexual relations, typically leading to some embarrassment by both partners (him b/c he's not manly enough, her b/c she didn't turn him on enough).

Unable to get erect: For lack of a better description, erectile dysfunction is the inability to obtain & maintain an erection (hard on) adequate for sexual activity leading to distress. Note that w/o distress, there is no dysfunction. Ed has many causes that should be considered & treated rather than masking w/medications, although these new drugs have revolutionized treatment.
