1 lung is the usual: The most common forms of pneumonia in an 18 year old usually only affect one lung and most of the time, recovery is complete. Yes, pneumonia is contagious, but usually not as contagious as a cold or the flu. It depends upon type of bacteria or virus that is causing the pneumonia, but it most cases you should feel significantly better within 24-36 hours after you start the proper treatment.

my son had the worst variant of covid-19. after 11 days in hospital, we thank god he is alive. his oxygen level was 80. he had covid pneumonia. he's home with oxygen. how long is his recovery? will he ever get off of oxygen? will his lungs heal? tx?

: Am sorry to hear of your son's terrible experience.  Unfortunately, it may take months for maximal healing, and likely that exertion activities will be extremely difficult at this point.  There will be healing but not feasible to predict extent based upon your post.  Recommend a visit to a respiratory specialist.

i am a health care worker with lung scarring from a pneumonia 2yrs ago. was hospitalized with pleural effusion and pneumonia with long recovery.  i am able to get covid-19 vaccine soon. apprehensive about mrna and long term side effects. is it safe?

Safe: I Just had mine last  week . It is safe and effective. As a health care worker it is critically important that you get it. Your past history is not relevant to receiving the vaccine.

Yes: After severe influenza a secondary bacterial process would be typical. Fortunately young patients are resilient and a functional recovery is expected.

Yes: There are many different causes of pneumonia, some affecting only one lobe of one lung, some involving all lobes of both lungs.  Any combination is possible.

will acute bronchitis or pneumonia permanently damage the lungs?

Accepted Answer

: It depends. Isolated bronchitis usually does not cause lasting damage. Bronchitis due to whooping cough can cause permanent damage. Similarly, most pneumonias resolve completely, staphylococcal pneumonia can cause permanent damage.

Pneumonia: Absolutely. Not sure if you are referring to pleural effusion (liquid in the space between the tissues surrounding the lungs), or to congestion due to fluid in air spaces in the lung which could be fluid overload during surgery, congestive heart failure, other.  If is hospital acquired pneumonia this can be life-threatening, particularly if due to multi-antibiotic resistant microorganisms.

You can: All types of pneumonias may have crackles in the bases of lung affected.

Accepted Answer

No: Infiltrate is how they describe how it looks on xray.

Accepted Answer

Ambiguous: Antibiotics. And for as long as it takes to get better. Usually for at least ten days. 

There is no way to be more specific. It depends on the history, the kind of pneumonia, and all kinds of other variables.
