Close leaking valves: Varicose veins are a result of malfunctioning valves usually in the saphenous system. The first step in treatment would be to obtain a venous reflux ultrasound to make the diagnosis and help plan treatment which could  be laser or radiofreqency closure of the valves usually with microphlebectomies and possible sclerotherapy or ultrasound directed sclerotherapy. You should see a vein specialist.

Venous insufficinecy: Visible veins on the legs are usually the result of venous insufficiency. The insufficiency may be in the skin [resulting tiny spider veins], or below the surface of the skin [ causing tiny and varicose veins] or in deep veins. It is best to have this evaluated by a vein specialist, often with aid of an ultrasound to see how best to treat. Weight loss or fat loss also makes veins more visible.

Massage feels good: Leg massage certainly feels great and i encourage you to do it. It does help keep the circulation going. Scientifically speaking I do not know of any evidence saying that it truly lowers risk of clot formation.

None: No specific exercise will get rid of varicose veins. Exercise to strengthen the calf muscles may delay progression of venous disease.

Accepted Answer

Wait 2 weeks: I recommend waiting 2 weeks after sclerotherapy before flying.  Sclerotherapy is  an  elective procedure and although the chances of developing DVT are very low, there is no need to take any unnecessary risks. I you have to fly within this two week period, then wear support hose, stay hydrated and take a baby Aspirin the night before the flight.

Should be safe.: Blood drawing is usually done from hand and arm veins because it is technically easier and more accessible.   There are occasions when blood is drawn from both superficial or deep leg veins but these carry a higher risk of potential complications especially phlebitis (superficial or deep). As a precaution, blood is only drawn from the leg veins if no hand veins are available.

enssoscopic laser vein surgery i had in jan. now left with two unsightly lumps on one leg. is this normal so long after? hope it goes!

Normal: Endovenous laser ablation results in the vein being heated which then constricts over time and dissolves.  During this process which can take several months, the lasered vein will become hard then soft.  Another reason for the hard areas could be where veins were disconnected by microphlebectomies (small puncture holes).  This can cause areas of clotted blood to form (hematoma) which will be hard.
