: Valsartan 80 mg would be the equivalent of losartan 50, so 40 will correspond to 25, please check with prescriber as well as sometimes the intent is to escalate doses not just to continue with same dose.

valsartan: Diovan/hcl is valsartan/hcl and losartan/hcl is a different drug combination but closely related as both are angiotensin receptor blockers.

Drug choices: Both losartan (l) and valsartan (v) are drug of the angiotensin receptor blocker  class. Perhaps you were switched due to your BP was not controlled on the dose of the l you were on. Both have few side effects and reduce BP and proteinuria quite well. L should be given twice a day and v can be given once daily for maximum their maximum effect. Check with your physician for her thoughts.

Same substance: This is same substance. Make sure you are sure it is medicine and not another medicine such as b blocker or just the hypertension, anxiety etc.

Valsartan: I would start on 50 mg and recheck BP in a week or 2 then bump to 100 if you need to.

Here are some ...: Check if she/he made some change in lifestyle such as decrease coffee drink or better sleep, etc. &amp;/or added other hight-BP-related drugs; these may make BP control different. So, look into other factors so to sort out what might be. But occasionally, one may claim one is better than another for the drugs in the same class, like what happens in using Viagra, Levitra, (vardenafil) or Cialis in PDE-5is.

losartan and valsartan have the same half life of 6 hours so why do some doctors say that losartan has to be taken twice a day to be effective while valsartan is considered a once a day pill?

: You are correct about the half life of both drugs. However, we do use valsartan twice a day in some patients as well if dose is covered by insurance. It is not uncommon that I prescribe losartan twice a day to some patients when the blood pressure is not stable throughout 24 hours or when I try to maximize the anti-proteinuric (reduce the protein amount in the urine) effect of losartan.

Combo: Both drugs are relatives. And work similarly. They are not exactly the same but do the same things.
