6-8 hours: Ativan (lorazepam) peaks at about 2 hours if taken orally. The drug will last about 6 to 8 hours but the drug will be in your system for longer period if time. If you have kidney dysfunction then it can last longer. Make sure not to drink alcohol with this medication.

DOSE DEPENDENT: Ativan (lorazepam) usually works within half an hour to an hour if the dose is sufficient. Different people respond differently. Start with a low dose and increase (daily) until there is a tranquilizing effect.
Overdosing creats peoblems.

Unlikely: It takes 5 half lifes to have a drug eliminated from your system and Ativan (lorazepam)'s half life is 12 to 14 hours. Oral Ativan (lorazepam) takes about 1 hour for it to reach its peak concentration in your blood though. Everyone responds to this medication differently though. I am just explaining to you the pharmacokinetics.

Give it time: If you sit a worry about it working, thus increasing your anxiety, it will not work as well.   Also, I hope you are using behavioral or thought techniques learned in therapy to deal with your symptoms.
Ativan is a short term solution.

Different doctor: If you current doctor is not helpful in treating your depression, it is appropriate to see a different one, specifically a psychiatrist. You should try to exercise. Exercise is as effective as medication of mild to moderate depression. Try to exercise for 30 minutes first thing each morning. Any exercise, walking, jogging, treadmill etc. will do

It depends: Chronic alcohol dependency can damage every organ in the body (except the kidneys). That means, alcohol can damage the nerves responsible for the gag reflex, plus, strong opiates like morphine can inhibit the gag reflex. So, it is possible morphine can make an already bad situation worse, possibly resulting in aspiration pneumonitis.

Natural hmm: Studies have shown that Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Acupuncture, and exercise can help. I personally recommend Yoga and or other forms of meditation. A daily walk in nature might help. However sometimes Moderate Anxiety needs to treated with daily medications to stabilize the Neurobiology.

Gradually, with help: You would first talk with your physician about where you are concerning the symptoms for which Lorazepam was prescribed.  If these are stable, you & your doctor can work out a gradual taper of your medicine.  It depends on the starting dose & frequency.  If you're having anxiety still, you may need further, different treatments before tapering lorazepam.
