Depends: Most individuals who experience tics in childhood will have them disappear as they grow older. Statistically, 1/3 will outgrow the tics while another 1/3 will continue to have a few tics that come and go. Less than 1/3 will have a severe case that has a significant impact on their lives. Most tics are harmless and the most troubling symptoms are co-occurring symptoms of adhd, depression or ocd.

No: Tics can be worsened or brought out by medications, but are not then called tourette's syndrome (ts).  Ts is present before any medications are used. It is an inherited neurobiological disorder, or an acquired autoimmune disorder. Tics that occur with meds are usually already present and subclinical, just worsened by the medication.

Several: Your best information will come from the psychiatrist treating you, as there are several effective treatments.  Many antipsychotics have been found effective, especially haloperidol.  If obsessional symptoms are present, which is usual, an ssri antidepressant may prove very helpful, such as fluvoxamine, or the tricyclic, clomipramine. You need a thorough evaluation and careful treatment.

Tourette's by: Definition has to include a vocal and not just a motor tic. The vocal tic can be as minor as clearing your throat repetitively. So, if you have a vocal and a motor tic, you have may have tourette's (diagnosis ultimately must be confirmed by a qualified professional who witnesses it). If you do not have a vocal tic, then you do not have tourette's.

Pattern: A simple tic disorder is often transient, lasting 6 mo or less or one that remains confined to a single pattern. Tourette is much more involved.It involves a vocal component , which could be as simple as throat clearing or a noise, and the motor component often changes over time and varies in intensity. Tourettes is a lengthy process lasting years.

Depends: Some medications are effective at treating tics. A commonly used one is clonidine and I have also had success with topiramate. If the tics are associated with ADHD, guanfacine is another choice. There are others so it would be best to speak with your physician for further guidance.

Not typical: People with tourette's can have violent outbursts that may be tics - in which we would call "vocal tics, ' if the vocalization is stylized and repetitive. But these patients may also have temperament problems that are not tic related.  Best to discuss temperament and vocal tics with your doctor.
