Levonorgestrel: Levonorgestrel is used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse (sex without any method of birth control or with a birth control method that failed or was not used properly [e.g., a condom that slipped or broke or birth control pills that were not taken as scheduled]). This medication is to be used as an emergency contraceptive or backup in case regular birth control fails.

Short answer: no: If you mean will any medications make it less effective the answer is no. But certain meds may make your bleeding heavier with the Mirena (levonorgestrel) (warfarin/plavix/lovenox) but these would increase your bleeding if you didn't have a mirena (levonorgestrel). There are no interactions with antibiotics, anti retrovirals, seizure meds, etc. This is one of the reasons i like iuds so much. Very few interactions.

None: I am not aware of any medications that would decrease the effectiveness of Mirena (levonorgestrel).

Abortion ?'s: Taking Levonorgestrel/Gynaecosid in anticipation of "possible pregnancy" is usually effective in inhibiting implantation even if fertilization does take place.  If menses does not occur, obtain a serum HCG test, and if positive consult a gyn physician if termination of pregnancy is desired.

Known side effect: The copper IUD is known to cause heavier periods, probably due to localized irritation and inflammation.  If it is sufficiently severe the solution is to remove the IUD.  The Levlen (ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel) might help but that defeats the point of the IUD.  A better approach would be to switch to the progesterone IUD which will actually decrease flow.

Signs /risks are few: If the infections by chlamydia or gonorrhea are very recent and only present in your cervix, they can be treated easily, promptly and effectively with the appropriate antibiotics without removing your Mirena (levonorgestrel) and without sequellae. These infections can frequently be totally asymptomatic; there may be no "signs". They are often detected by simply performing tests on your vaginal/cervical secretions.

Lighter over time: For the first 4-6 months, your menses will be a little more irregular and erratic.  However, after 6 months, menses will be much lighter or even absent.  Amenorrhea (no menses) is experienced by 30% of women with a Mirena (levonorgestrel) after 2 years.
