More info: It's not really clear what you mean from this question. It may be better to have a live consult. Are you getting pain or is it just weakness. Do you have any sensory changes in your leg or associated back pain? Peoples legs sometimes give way because this is their body's way of preventing pain e.g. when they have a sprained knee.

Herniated disc: The spinal cord (back bone) is made up of a column of bones (vertebrae) stacked on top of one another.  Between the vertebrae there are discs that serve as shock absorbers.  Herniation of a disc can cause pressure on nerves and cause symptoms such as those you describe.  Your symptoms are consistent with problems in the lumbar spine.  Herniated disc is usually diagnosed with MRI.

Weakness: You need an examination to determine what is causing your symptoms. There are a number of problems causing back ; leg pain, some of which may be serious. Many of these conditions are treatable so see a health care provider soon so you can improve your health.

You may have a: Pinched nerves in your LUMBAR SPINE. Because this may involve MOTOR nerves "leg giving away" this evaluation should be ASAP!  You can start with your PCP (primary Care Provider) who can perform a NEUROLOGIC exam and possibly order a LUMBAR MRI!

Could be: There are many reasons for weaknes in legs and arms. From cervical spondylosis and pathologies to muscular and vascular conditiosns. You need to be check ou thoroughly.

I'm not clear if the: Problem is w the back side of your kneecap, or w the femur or tibia. But yes, it is likely that a problem w any of these can be helped. Please see an orthopedic surgeon to help identify the specific problem & explore what treatment(s) could be the most helpful. Take care.

: Wonder if there is leg weakness associated with cognitive problems.  See your doctor, explore possible B12 deficiency, but other causes might be considered.  Good luck.

Restless legs: This sounds like you may have restless legs syndrome. See your doctor to get your iron level checked first - that is a common cause of rls, common in young women like yourself who menstruate, and is easily treated. If that is normal or corrected and you still have symptoms, there is medication available for this.
