Depends: I like citroma and miralax, but if someone were pregnant i would use lactulose. Senna should not be used for long periods of time. Amitiza (lubiprostone) is a prescription laxative for chronic constipation.

Need more info: Are you chronically constipated? You may take a fiber laxative like Metamucil and drink enough water daily so that your urine is colorless. For the long term you may try to increase your intake of fiber foods. Consult this site for fiber foods.

TRY VARIOUS THINGS: I am not sure why the laxative is not working but there are many things to do before the laxative. Hydrate, exercise, fiber, etc. If these do not work then you may need to speak with your doctor.

Immediately: There is no reason why you cannot eat after taking a laxative and in fact sometimes eating itself can "encourage" a bowel movement!!!!

Laxatives: Laxatives should not use to loose weight, the loss will be temporary and at the cost of causing other problems.  You will lose needed fluid and electrolytes and may become dependent on using laxatives to have normal bowel movements if you use these on long term basis.

DO NOT USE DAILY: Your bowel may become totally dependent on laxatives and you will not be able to have a bowel movement without them and could lead to a bowel impaction.

I assume you: Are talking about prep for colonoscopy.  It can't be done without appropriate prep, so contact your doctor before the procedure date.  You might need something stronger.

Colonoscopy lavage: Colon lavage solutions "clean" by washing through from esophagus to rectum. Bear in mind however that there are no bacteria (aside from helicobacter) that colonize the stomach, & in most individuals the small bowel is relatively free of bacteria (unless there is underlying bacterial overgrowth due to structural or motility pathology).  Food in stomach empties in 4-6 hours, small bowel in 17 hours.
