Depends: The laceration should be evaluated in the er or by your doctor. Often the skin is closed initially even if there is deeper injuries. A hand surgeon will usually operate on the hand or wrist in the next several days to repair the deeper structures. This allows you to have surgery on an empty stomach and with a well rested surgeon, both very important.

Both : Both gout  and infection can cause these symptoms.

Cuts in the skin can be a path for infection, accompanied by swelling and redness

gouty deposits in the joints can give severe pain swelling and redness

infection doesn't usually resolve with antiinflammatories alone.

Gouty pain can, but these medicines treat only the symptoms and not the underlying issue, the uric acid deposits that can be linked to excess uric acid in the blood.(although gouty attacks can occur with normal uric acid)

pain and internal "stiffness or tightness" in joints can also occur from any slight swelling in a joint, from arthritis, trauma and may not be due to gout at all. Pain in the thenar eminence or what is the meaty part of the thumb very often is referred from the thumb basilar or cmc joint ( at the base of the thumb where the thumb meets the wrist)

an evaluation that includes x-rays and bloodwork can tell you more.

Oh : Oh my gosh. You are writing into a doctor column to ask if you should or should not follow the advice of your orthopedic surgeon?  You surgeon is the person who knows the most about your injury, your surgery and the risks at this stage of the game.  Since none of the doctors responding to this column have examined you, i think the best advice you can be given is to follow your doctors advice. I know you may not be happy with this answer because you really want to play basket ball now; but by following your doctors advice it could prevent further complications down the road.

Caution...: A hand laceration is very tricky because all layers of skin, tendons, ligaments, nerves, muscles are all very close to surface; the skin is rather tight and any swelling can lead to destruction of one of the above parts. Furthermore it is the most important part of all the extremities for most functions. If very superficial, clean, dry, cover. If any more, er for proper care, prevent/rx infection.

Safe: Yes, i think acupuncture would be safe, but i don't suspect that it will be of significant benefit. Occupational therapy or open tenolysis is most likely what is needed.

No: Not personally, although for superficial fingertip laceration, such as from playing guitar, if you push skin edges together and then apply glue just to hold edges together, will work well.  Really not a good idea for deep cuts.

How old is laceratio: If it is recent, and as the current acceptable standard with in 24 hours it should be repaired with associated treatment.If it is old, more than 24 hrs or even 48 hours it is saer to let it heal by secondary intention( by it self with granulation tissue).But if it is complex and involves tendon, nerve etc, .Go to the emergency room immediately.
