24y/o f with left knee pain. when i go down stairs/hills, keep it bent for 3 mins or so and at night i get random shooting pains that move up my thigh?

Knee Cap: Knee pain is very common. The symptoms you describe on the surface sound like patellofemoral syndrome. This can have many causes. Some if which include improper muscle activation, misalignment of the knee cap, or poor biomechanics. The sharp pain in the thigh is not part of this process. I would recommend evaluation by a sports medicine specialist.

OA vs PFPS: Two possibilities are most likely.  The first is osteoarthritis, or wear and tear ("rust in the joint").  This is usually in middle-age people but can occur earlier with excessive use.  Another option is patellofemoral pain syndrome, or inflammation where the kneecap tracks on the femur (upper leg bone).  In most people, these can both be helped with antinflammatory meds and quad strengthening.

Arthritis: There are a number of possibilities but the most likely is some form of arthritis of the knee.  Pain down the leg occurs in this condition due to the alteration of leg motion as you guard to protect the arthritis.  Try an NSAID such as 400-800 mg of ibuprofen (along with a stomach acidity counteractant like omeprazole), for a week or two ..  If that fails, see your family doctor.

Tendinitis: It could be some kind of tendonitis...Is there any specific position it hurts in? Like maybe only when you lay down and the leg is fully straight (without a bend in the knee).

Knee pain: You may have fluid in side your knee. The most relaxed position of knee is on half bending. If you lying with knee straight, the pressure inside knee capsule might higher, and you experience some pain. However, this is just one of the explanations.

Yes: Getting out of a low chair can be stressful on the knees and a higher  seat should make it less stressful.  Another simple way to lessen knee pain after prolonged sitting is to bend and straighten your knees periodically while seated to prevent them from getting stiff.

Probably overuse: Since this involves both knees, it is probably from overuse, especially since only the back of the knee.  Take more frequent breaks to get up and walk around.  Perform simple range of motion activities by moving the knee through full range of motion and stretch at the limits of motion when fully straight and fully bent.  Ice may help if pain persists.  Apply ice to painful area 15-20 min/hour.

It could be a sprain: Strain, tendinitis, bursitis, arthritis etc. Try applying warm compress and taking nsaids for now. Go see your dr for reassurance!

I think 2 weeks is: Too early to tell for sure what your eventual result will be.  You should consult with your ortho surgeon just to be sure.
