Ligament damage: The phrase to "blow-out" your knee can refer to any type of significant knee injury. Most commonly it refers to a tear of the acl or anterior cruciate ligament. Other ligaments can also be involved including the mcl (medial collateral ligament) and occasionally the PCL (posterior cruciate ligament).  An orthopaedic evaluation can help identify the severity of a knee injury.

That : That blanket statement may not be true at face value. The falls may be have an underlying mechanical problem or be a poor training problem. Look into your technique and video your moves. Please indicate your sex, age and if you have knock or valgus knees. You may be able to avoid additional injuries with timely changes.

Nerve irritation: The feeling in your left foot that you are experiencing is most likely an irritated nerve ( could be anywhere from the back to the foot itself) and likely is not related to the knee. If it is bothering you, see a physiatrist for diagnosis and treatment.

It doesn't tend to get better easily.: I suggest you use a patellar support knee brace. Get some proper instruction on quadricep exercises. You want to avoid going up and down stairs. If you do need to go up and down stairs lead with the good leg. Avoid squatting and deep knee bends. Consider over-the-counter nonsteroidal medication such as Advil or Aleve (naproxen). If after a period of eight weeks you're still having a lot of symptoms you may consider seeing an orthopedic surgeon.

Yes: A simple bump would have resolved by now. The persistent bruising and swelling tells you it needs to be checked. You may have damaged tendons or ligaments or your cartilage. Be seen and diagnosed. All the best.

Could be serious: When you broke the leg the twisting force could have damaged your knee as well. If that is something that does not get better by itself after a few days of resting the knee it would be a good idea to have it looked at (probably best to see the dame doctor that treated the fracture).
