KIDNEY PAIN: Kidney pain is often on one side and position has little bearing on the severity. Muscle pain ofter gets better or worse with position and posture changes.

Difficult to tell: Sometimes it's difficult to differentiate. Occasionally burning with urination or blood in the urine will give you a clue. A urinalysis can help differentiate as well as certain imaging studies. I'd start with your primary care doc to help differentiate.

Urinalysis: If you have fever, chill, sweats, different quality or severity of back pain, groin pain, painful/burning urination, more or less frequent urination, cloudy or bloody/dark urine, it may be related to the bladder, ureters, or kidneys.  The first step is a urinalysis at any doctor's office or lab.

Most important..: The most important thing is a urinalysis. With pyelonephritis you would have a fever almost always.  With a kidney stone, usually microscopic or macroscopic blood in urine.
If your pain last more than a day, see your pcp asap. You c an take over the counter alleve.

Too vague to know: It will take a detailed history, in person exam &amp; possibly tests to narrow down the origin of this pain. When it begins to interfere with your activities schedule an appointment &amp; have it evaluated.

: Kidney pain is generally not related to stretching and originates in the flanks. So it is not from the kidneys

Wow-further progress: Ms angiebanks73--when i last answered your question, you had lost 46 lbs, now at 52? That is phenomenal! anyhow, fatty liver by itself typically does not cause pain. Acute hepatitis--either from infection/alcohol/or drugs can cause pain, but you will have other symptoms as well. From knowing a bit of your history, i sincerely doubt the liver is the cause of your pain. Please consult doc. Good luck.

Back pain: Kidney pain is generally felt in the lower back - the flanks more precisely.  Pain in your upper back that increases when you take deep breaths more closely relates to either a lung/pleura issue or musculoskeletal issue.

There are: other causes of low back pain as well.  Probably not a good idea to self-diagnose, you should go  and get evaluated.
