i have had itchy skin for quite some time.  when i scratch, i get raised welts that aren't red.  sometimes they are parallel lines.  stress?

Dermatographism: Your skin symptoms of itching or hyperreactivity can be due to allergy to something internal or external and may even be due to chronic stress. Antihistamines like Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or Claritin may help. Atarax has been helpful also. See an allergist if symptoms persist although sometimes a cause cannot be found.

Dry skin?: Apply a moisturizer all over your body immediately after bathing and preferably again in another 12 hrs +/- bathing.  Avoid scented and anti-bacterial soaps.   May also try an antihistamine to see if this helps. Check any lotion, medication, supplements which were newly introduced prior to onset of your itching. See dermatologist if problem persists.

Difficult to say: It is difficult to say what this could be.  It could be urticara.  You might want to have this evaluated if it reoccurs.

ive recently came across this very itchy skin issue. everytime i scratch my skin or if anything is compressed or touched on my skin it welps up and im almost always very itchy. im not sure whats going on but its uncomfortable and i need pointers?

Allergic?: Have you changed any of your toiletries, changed laundry detergents, new foods, new medicine, new pets?  Your hives may be caused by an allergic reaction.  Try over the counter antihistamine.  If you start to feel wheezy or tingly around the mouth, notice swelling of your lips or throat, report to the ER immediately.  Less commonly hives can be caused by stress/anxiety or changes in the weather.

Need to examine: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without taking additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. However, the response to scratching is normal. Try using an emollient, like Vaseline on the dry skin.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex.

Some thoughts...: Without a picture it's very difficult to diagnose a skin condition, and what you're describing can have many different causes.  It could be a mild eczema, a fungal infection, a viral exanthem, a reaction to something you've come in contact with (a new perfume, lotion, soap), bug bites... It's a long list.  If otc Hydrocortisone or Benadryl (diphenhydramine) isn't helping, make sure to check in with your doc!

Dermatographic: This may or may not be a chronic situation.  Try taking antihistamine to see if it helps.  Sometimes dry skin can also cause this type of reaction and thus applying a moisturizer &lt;3 minutes after bathing may help.  If problem persists, see derm or allergist.

Itching: itching is actually a form of pain perception. It can be due to localized reaction with allergy causing substances, dry skin and eczema or it can be due to systemic illness such as liver disease. There are many causes to itching and further investigation with laboratory studies and examination by your doctor are in order.
