By seeing the lesions and pressing upon the skin the doctor (like myself in the emergency department) can get the context of the rash. Hard to say: If the rash is moving from a local to a general distribution it is unlikely a simple contact dermatitis like poison ivy. Generalized rashes can be secondary to an infection (virus or bacteria) a food reaction or bug bites. Without examining the rash it is hard to speculate on a cause or specific treatment. If it itches, Benadryl can be given for comfort.

Try HC cream: Without seeing the rash it's hard to tell what caused it, but it's likely an allergic or irritant reaction. Try Hydrocortisone cream, which is available without a prescription. If that doesn't work you'll need to see a dermatologist.
