in pregnancy, can i use lotions with fruit oils (burts bees) that contain vitamin a?to be clear, vit a & retinol are not listed as ingredients but fruit (like baobab) oil & betacarotene are listed as an ingredients. 7wks & been using. is this safe?

Toxicity to infant: Retinol is a a vitamin a derivative is great for your skin but can theoretically be damaging to your developing infant.  Better to wait to use creams that contain retinoids until after delivery (safe with breast feeding).

Normally safe: It's used for stretch marks and moisturizer. It's also has high anti-oxidant properties. As long as you're using it topically, you should be okay.

Unnecessary : Any prenatal vitamin has a sufficient amount of vitamin A in it to support your body during pregnancy. You do not need an additional vitamin A supplement. Additional Vitamin A has not been shown to help clear infections any faster than without it.

NONE!: It is important to have adequate vitamin a in pregnancy- not enough can cause fetal growth retardation & blindness. The only hazard is more than 10, 000 iu of preformed a in the first weeks of pregnancy. It is virtually impossible to get that much from food- one would need to have 22 servings of milk, 40 eggs or 42 servings of salmon every day to get that much vitamin a!

It's okay: It is a fat extracted from the nut of the african shea tree. It is a triglyceride (fat) derived mainly from stearic acid and oleic acid.  It is widely used in cosmetics as a moisturizer, salve or lotion. Shea butter is edible and is used in food.  Most shea butter is used in cosmetics for moisturizing skin.

Should be ok...: A normal healthy pregnant woman eating a balanced diet and taking prenatal vitamins, in the United States or similar developed countries, does not need to worry about vitamin deficiencies. If she has a pre-existing disease that causes nutritional problems, then her ob-gyn and a nutritionist can investigate to see if changes in diet or supplements are needed.

Completely safe!: You're correct that taking (or eating) more than 10, 000 units of vit a in the first 7 weeks of pregnancy increases risk of birth defects. However, spinach ; kale contain no vitamin a: they have beta carotene, which your body can convert into vit. A as needed, but there's no evidence that any amount of beta carotene is harmful in pregnancy.Please choose organic spinach; regular is high in pesticides.

Yes: No more than 10, 000 iu of preformed vitamin a should  be taken during pregnancy but preformed vitamin a is only found in animal foods (meat, eggs, dairy). There are no vegetarian sources of actual vitamin a- any "vitamin a" said to be in those foods are from carotenes and those are very safe in pregnancy.
