i just had an ecg heart tracing done. the lady said it looks okay. but i noticed it says normal sinus rhythm. normal ecg. non specific st abnormality. what does non specific st abnormality mean?

: Non-specific is technical wording for: it cannot be interpreted but doesn't fit the usual pattern. Please discuss this with the doc who ordered it for their interpretation specific to your case.

Ekg: This is a normal EKG. The axis deviation refers to the situation and tilt of the heart only.

: With respect to ectopy, we'd have to have results of an outpatient Holter Monitor to determine whether there are PAC's or PVC's or both, how many per 24 hours, all single or some runs, with or without exercise, symptomatic or not. The very initial effect of Valsalva  is a brief stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system but the main effect, through the vagus nerve, is a parasympathetic response

: Only with a standard 12 lead EKG can you make any affirmative conclusion about the cardiac rhythm. The tracing obtained by smart device is not trusted.

Verapamil: Sometimes but we have newer meds that generally are tried first.....

Accepted Answer

Maybe: It depends.  It won't prolong life or prevent strokes, but it may improve the quality of life if atrial fibrillation is significantly bothersome.  Cather ablation is another option if drugs don't work or have significant side effects.

Normal QT: While one would assume so,  the only accurate way is to have or have had  an electrocardiogram done and then measure the  QT interval on it.
I will assume one was done because most times one gets that done before one gets an echocardiogram.
I would contact the person who ordered the echocardiogram.

ECG: That is a common ECG reading which can indicate something is wrong but also can be as it says nonspecific and 'no big deal'. Ask your doctor if there is reason for concern or further investigation.

Common reading: "abnormal" because there are non-specific changes which are not  specific enough to meet a true diagnosis, but not normal enough to  say normal, so somewhat of a soft call or indecisive read, but very common and does not necessarily mean anything.  The bottom line, the ECG findings need to be placed in the clinical context in which it was taken, and compared to previous and subsequent ECGs.
