i inserted an iud device in 2017 and i am now on ferrimed. i wonder if it is because of the device because my menstrual flow is very heavy lately. i'm usually very dizzy during my cycle.

A copper IUD: can cause or allow heavier periods, to the point of anemia, as you may be experiencing.  Discuss with your doctor and get checked for anemia. This can get worse, and require a blood transfusion.

i am a 17 year old student. i have been taking oral contraceptives  to control my heavy menstrual bleeding but i also no longer feel dizzy, lightheaded and my bp doesn't keep droping. so is it safe to continue with these pills?

: Oral Contraceptives contain hormones that help to regulate your body's menstrual cycle to limit the side effects including heavy bleeding, pain, dizziness, lightheadedness and low BP. Since your symptoms are improved the medication is working. It does not mean they are cured. If you stop taking the medication, they will return. It is advised that you keep taking the pills daily.

OCP: Depending on the cause of heavy bleeding  and age of the child oral contraceptives usually work best. But heavy bleeding can rarely be caused by coagulation defects.

Doctor can evaluate: For mild to moderate menstrual cramps, women can try tylenol, (acetaminophen) midol, pamprin, advil, motrin, or Aleve (all are otc). Ponstel is by prescription from the doctor. The doctor also can evaluate why there is heavy flow. To treat heavy flow, some women use birth control pills (ocp's) or other therapies.

Depends: Hello Ashley,

Your flow is indeed heavy. It can even get heavier if you move around alot at work.  If you do, then I would suggest that maybe you stay at home until the bleeding subsides somewhat.  If you are dizzy or light-headed then by all means rest at home.  However, if you sit primarily at work and have easy discreet access to the restroom then you might want to go to work.

Neither: The best thing you can do for hygiene is to change your pad and/or tampon every time you go to the bathroom   leaving anything soiled i or out of your body for a long period of time is not hygienic.

Not normal: Please see your gyn for a work-up , you may be a candidate for bc pills or other meds to make your period shorter and lighter, with the newer low dose pills like loloestrin- they don'y usual promote any breast enlargement, please make an appt to see your gyn.

Limited options: At this late date there are few things that might help. Simply taking ibuprofen 600 mg every 6 hours may help a little and it is available over the counter. Tranexamic acid can be used for heavy periods but requires a prescription.

how urgent is my unusually heavy menstrual flow? i'm losing 7.5 -12 ml/hour. can it wait a few days, or is it urgent? i feel very weak and lightheaded

Urgent: If you are bleeding heavily, and experiencing symptoms of dizziness and light-headedness, then you need to seek medical attention immediately.
