Ingredient Toxicity.: The active ingredient of ben gay is methyl salicylate. Extended over use, especially in children, can be dangerous and even fatal. Older people such as adults have a larger body mass and are less likely to be affected, but there is always that possibility. Follow the directions for applications carefully.

I would recommend: A topical steroid cream over the counter or calamine lotioned Aveeno (oatmeal) over the Ben gay. The Ben gay is more for muscle aches.

Need to add exercise: The shoulder exercise program under the guidance of physical therapy is your best next move. You should have an evaluation by your physician to make sure what the diagnosis is. Although injections can help these are not done first.

Maybe: You would have to test the baby's skin by applying a small amount to a small area of skin for several days (once a day) and if no reaction you may  why would you need it if muscle strain heat and light massage with baby oil or soothing cream with heat should do the trick if in pain tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin would handle that.

today i fell on my knee , now it is swollen and warm, when it happened i used an icebag for 30 minutes then applied some bengay. it feels warm when i touch and of course is red. is it normal to be warm. what to do to ease the pain at night?

: Yes, your knee will be warm and swelling after an injury for a couple days. If you do not have problem with stomach and kidney disease, you can take Ibuprofen OTC 200 mg x 2-3 tablets every 6 hours as needed for pain for 3 days, take with a full stomach is preferred for less adverse effects on stomach. If you have weak stomach or kidney disease, just take plain acetaminophen (Tylenol).
