i was diagnosed with mono. a few months after, i was diagnosed with genital herpes. my boyfriends test came back clean. is it possible that the herpes virus came from the mono virus?

No, but...: Being "diagnosed" with a disease usually means there is a high likelihood of having that disease, but sometimes initial diagnoses are reversed when further testing shows that an alternative diagnosis is more correct. If each person gets the Herpes Type-Specific blood test and the EBV Antibodies Panel blood test done, then there can be more clarity about which virus a person has (HSV1, HSV2, EBV).

i am a 27 year old straight male and i contracted genital herpes 2 months ago. is it possible to pass on the virus even when i have no symptoms?

Yes-herpes is tricky: Most people don't have outbreaks once they acquire herpes-so hopefully that is you, since they can be painful and embarrassing. You might be a risk though, even WITHOUT obvious rashes/sores because of something called 'asymptomatic viral shedding'. The best thing is to TALK to your partner(s) AND use protection. Barrier protection isn't 100% though for a number of reasons. There are antivirals too

You have to: You have to be honest. 85% of population has been exposed to herpes. If they really love you it won't matter because they will accept you as you are.

Herpes spreads: HSV-1 (classically considered “oral herpes”) and HSV-2 (classically considered “genital herpes”) can be spread to the opposite site and cause identical symptoms.  The virus definitely sheds much more during an active outbreak; it does occasionally shed without an outbreak. If you have ever had ORAL exposure to HSV-2 and the virus is laying dormant in your facial nerves, it could spread via a kiss.

None: Unless your immune system is compromised there should be no systemic problems from this infection.

I'm sure the virus: stays alive for a while but I'm not sure if it's hours or days.Best not to put your lips to anything that a person with an active cold sore has recently touched.

Precautions? Yes...: You can spread the virus by any oral/genital contact. This is possible even when lesions are not present. Besides using condoms, you can help reduce the risk of transmission by taking an antiviral medication such as Valtrex (valacyclovir) everyday.

if 80% of us pop. carry hsv1 virus why isnt genital herpes much more common with oral sex being such a popular activity?

Both are common.: The prevalence of infection in adult us population for hsv-1 is about 60%  and for hsv about 20%. There is a lot of crossover with the two types.

does sharing a joint with someone who has genital herpes put me at risk for contracting the virus orally since we shared the same joint? i have seen conflicting answers on the topic?

: Very few people with genital herpes also has oral herpes. You cannot catch someone's genital herpes unless you have sex with that person. Sharing joints, eating utensils, drinks, etc is never a risk. (It's rarely even a risk if the infected person has oral herpes.)

Herpes virus: Infection depends on the number of virus particles and the exposure time. Exposure does not necessarily lead to infection.
