dry mouth +thirst around period? when i'm pmsing, on period and after period i'm really thirsty. had blood sugar tested during this time and it was normal (4.4/79). my electrolytes = sodium 143, potassium 4.1, urea 3.3. no addinsons. hormonal thing?

for 2 years i've had thirst and feel dehydrated but now it's worse and more frequent. sodium is 143, potassium is 4.1. diabetes and addinson's were ruled out. have a dry mouth, sometimes pee less which is concentrated with smell. what could it be?

: By the sodium level your body fluid is on the low side but not consistent with dehydration. If you drink less and urine is concentrated and smelled stronger you do not have diabetes insipidus. I wonder if your symptoms are due to dry mouth due to poor saliva excretion. Have you ever worked up for condition such as Sjogren's syndrome. This condition causes dry mouth but not true thirsty.

: These numbers are all within the normal range. Nothing more can be said about how this relates to or the origin of, the vague symptoms cited in the post. Only an evaluation that includes a full history, exam and review of all test findings would begin to explain the process.

my husband has fought conjestive heart failure and low soduim and low potassium , is it safe to be 121 in sodium?

Not safe: Normal lab reference ranges may vary, but a sodium of 121 is likely low regardless of lab.  A low sodium and potassium in setting of CHF is likely due to use of diuretics to help remove fluids from his lungs.  His doctors should be able to help normalize his sodium and potassium levels, provided his heart condition can be stabilized and kidneys are functioning normally.

Over Rx?: I see that you are already taking Fludrocortisone for what i would imagine is addison's disease. You are on several medications and the interplay may have lowered both your cations; if either is far from reference range, your physician knows how to manage this.

None: Low sodium or low potassium are not corrected by vitamins. First, one must determine the cause of these deficiencies and correct the causes while administering potassium supplements or sodium chloride,when appropriate. Low sodium causes and treatments are often more complex than in low potassium states.

Not dehyration: You're not dehydrated, you're diluted. Your excessive fluid intake is causing your electrolyte imbalance. Eating salt will not raise your serum sodium for physiologic mechanisms that can't be explained here. This is called "dilutional hyponatremia" - you can google it.

Lots of things: The idea of a reciprocal relationship between these two cations is an old pop / quack / phony claim. If you are not taking meds, my first concern would be an interstitial nephritis.  If they are significantly out of kilter, get worked up.

i had a head ct said all was normal, but report said bilateral basal ganglia calcification/mineralization is noted. what is that? i had low potassium.

Accepted Answer

Usually of no signif: The basal ganglia are deep brain regions.  While rarely calcification here can be related to significant brain injury cases, they are frequently seen as we age and of no significance.
