Not usually: Traveler's diarrhea occurs when you accidentally eat or drink food contaminated with germs.  To prevent it eat cooked food served hot, drink bottled water and avoid fresh produce, buffet meals, dipping sauces, and ice in  your drinks.  Of course you will want to wash your hands before you eat and after toileting. If two people on the same trip get sick, usually they have eaten the same food.

Hard to tell: Could have been a flu bug or too much wine.  Don't eat or drink after him or kiss him till you're sure he's ok.  If he is your age, he should not be drinking wine!

Very hard to tell: Contagiousness varies among different "stomach viruses" and among different people, so is not easily predictable. However, one can feel safer if the sick person wakes up on Day 5 without any symptoms the preceding 4 days. If unlucky, she can still catch a virus and come down with the illness. Food poisoning is usually less contagious, but depends on the bacteria type.

A "Loose" Link: Diarrhea, in and of itself, is not always related to infection so it is impossible to say whether this individual is or is not contagious.  Proper hand washing by a supervising parent should minimize risk of spread within the household and to others outside the home if this were infectious.  In most viral cases, your infectious before symptoms start.  With bacteria and parasites during and after.

GI upset: Could be food poisoning or stomach virus. The stomach viruses are very contagious so wash everyone's hands often. Food poisoning is not contagious but who ever are the same food is at risk. Encourage lots to drink in small frequent amounts. If there is blood in the diarrhea, see your doctor.

Probably plenty: Take precautions; separate towels (consider using paper), dishes, utensils; separate bathroom facilities, if available. Wash with soap and water-a lot (your son should too).  Disinfect bathroom surfaces, door knobs, kitchen surfaces, e.g. Lysol.

Yes: C.Diff is contagious and spreads easily if you do not was your hands properly after contact with a patient who is currently infected.  If your symptoms do not resolve, or get worse, you should see your primary care doctor as soon as possible to have your stool tested and receive appropriate medicine.  If you can't see your pcp soon, you should go to an ER for eval.

friend's husband went to china on business trip and got diarrhea for two weeks. now she has it for over a week. is this a virus or could he have brought a bacteria home? is a bacteria even contagious?

Could be either: If the husband is now better , then she should be better eventually too. Simple diarrhea can clear up on its own but some causes, are by bacteria that may need an antibiotic to clear up. Generally if it lasts more than a week or if you noticed blood in the diarrhea or feel really ill you should see a doctor.
