i think i have an infected hangnail on the left side of my ring finger. it is very red, swollen and quite sore to the touch. can i treat this at home?

Yes, at first: This may be a paronychium (inflammation around the area where the nail meets the finger's tissues).  You can try frequent (every several hours) prolonged warm soaks which can bring this to a head and allow drainage.  If, however, the redness extends beyond this area, the finger becomes swollen or in any way worse,  you should be seen immediately, preferably by a hand surgeon.

i have a really sore finger. i am double jointed and today i have this pain that only happens when i push my finger down. what is it? it's not swollen

Rest and ice: I would recommend rest, ice, elevation and gentle range of motion exercises with possible nsaids for 7-10 days. If it does not improve or becomes worse, see a physician.

Be seen: Probably would be well suited to be seen.  Multiple potential considerations including inflammatory conditions and even possible infections causes.  A detailed exam and appropriate studies would likely show the cause.

Not likely: It would be unusual for a joint infection to present one month later. Lacerations to the fingers can be stiff, sore and swollen for months. Keep your finger moving and try scar desensitisation massage by massaging the area with hand cream three or four times a day.

Infection: Swelling and redness arising from a hangnail usually indicates you have developed a paranichial infection. Warm soaks and antibiotics are indicated for this problem. Seek care with your primary care doctor.

Need an xray: It could be a fracture so you should get an xray. If not broken then it is likely bone contusion.

Avoid exercise : You could have a tendinitis on the finger, tendon or ligament injury ,or a bony injury (less likely) . Rest the finger by avoiding the exercises movements that make you hurt. May apply cold compresses for 15 minutes to the affected digit 2-3 Xday. See what happens. If there is no improvement then you will need to see your doctor and possibly be referred to a sports medicine , ortho/hand specialist

Initially yes: If your problem is acute ice is the way to go you might also try advil (ibuprofen) r naprosin 
after 24hrs heat may help
if pain persist.... See your hand surgeon.

See below: Soak the finger in warm water with some liquid dish washing detergent.Take a cuticle stick and push the skin away from the nail. Try to pack a small piece of cotton under the edge.  Apply antiseptic and bandaid.

Joint discomfort: If these symptoms are not due to overuse, a type of arthritis is suspected. If symptoms persist see your physician or a rheumatologist for diagnosis and treatment. Appropriate tests such as Rheumatoid factor, ANA, uric acid level, sedimentation rate or CRP  will be ordered.
