Common: In infants it is common for them to have a bowel movement after each feed. Most important is to see if the child is behaving and responding well. If baby is sucking well, feeding well, has no vomiting, smiles and is active, there is no cause for concern. But if you remain worried take the baby to a pediatrician to have the baby checked.

Could be, but...: There are a lot of mucous-producing cells in the colon and rectum, so some mucous can be normal at times. But if the mucous is persistent or heavy, stools are loose, your infant seems uncomfortable, not gaining weight well, or any blood in the stools, it would warrant evaluation.

Poop Colors: The color of stool is not usually concerning, as it reflects a lot of things we eat. Dark black, red or white stools are the only colors that are worrisome.

Stools: Babies have one/week if breastfed to 7-9 stools/day. Baby should not dehydrate. Check the fontanel, as this should not be sunken and check if baby has enough wet nappies. Stools frequency differ according to the different formulas

Green poo: The poo is colored by bile added during digestion.It starts out dark green and transitions through yellows to brown over time.Green poo just means the material  is moving through faster. If the kid seems to be better on the comfort, stay with it. The feed seldom has anything to do with or help in treating colic. It normally fades at 4 mo when they start to control their movement more.

No problem: All people have E Coli in their feces but it is not a pathogen.  An infant getting a small amount of her own stool in her mouth will suffer no consequences.

my baby is 1mnth & struggles to poop on his own. he keeps pushing but nothing comes out & ends up crying due to frustration & pain. i insert a laxative for infants which helps with instant relief. but i'm afraid this will affect him longterm?

Could be: The first thing I would want to make sure is that your child is gaining weight appropriately and thriving.  If that is the case, there are numerous things that could be of help, such as different formulas.  That decision can be best made with your child's doctor who will know what formula your child is and/or has been on.  Good luck.

Could be: Constipation in infants can occur if they are having trouble digesting certain components in formulas.  Make sure you are mixing it properly, as concentrated formulas can also cause constipation.
