Too much coffee?: Dark-colored stools may result from iron supplements, foods you eat (like a lot of spinach), substances (like peptobismol), but most significantly suggests bleeding. When blood is denatured by acid in your stomach, as from ulcers, stools will turn tarry ("melena"). Blood may also be ingested from nose bleeds, bleeding gums... Persistent melena (without obvious cause) ; symptoms warrants md visit.

Constipation: Small sized stool round in shape means it has been sitting in the colon for a long time and all the water is absorbed and has formed pebbles. Diarrhea caused by stool softner is probably water flowing around impacted stool. Have to cleanse the bowel. Avoid white flour, meat and use more green vegetables and fruits. Drink a lot of water. Treat constipation aggressively. See the dr. If not better.

? Melana: Hello. Black, tarry malodorous stool (melena)  can sometimes be related to gastrointestinal bleeding. If this fits the description - it is best to have it medically evaluated.

Stool color: It is unlikely there is a problem. If the stool appears black with a bad odor, it may represent blood. If she is other well and not in pain she is likely fine. You can always have your doctor check a hemoccult. All the best.

Relax: There are may things with undigestible hulks such as favs beans, sausage/hot dogs, pills, small peppers, olives, corn, seeds and nuts in general. Unless you are having some dietary issues, abdominal pains/cramping regularly, or constipation that causes problems, I suggest you stop worrying about what's in you poop. If you are concerned, your gastroenterologist can explain in better detail.

Hmm: It you have dark stool that has a coffee ground consistency - please get med eval soon.  If you had an ulcer - that can cause bleeding. Black, tarry, foul- smelling stool - get help asap. Possible causes ofr blood in stool  include: fissures, fistulas, hemorrhoids, cancer, infections or inflammation. Get evaluated if more than a one time occurence.
