Yes: Besides being embarrassing in public it will dry out the skin on your thumb and possible damage the nail. It is better than smoking. Most pediatricians who deal with use a weapon by recommending painting thumb with unpleasant taste. Consider doing that

Infection: Infection is a danger if you are biting your thumb nail. Are you biting the thumb itself? If yes- basic trauma can occur.  Consider cognitive behavioral therapy or behavior modification  if you would like to work on extinguishing those behaviors.

I would ask why: You feel the need to . These are classic "transitional objects" that help children to feel more secure. I would have thought one would have grown out of this stage long before age 18 years old.  Ask what need it is filling? Find another way to fill that need.

Trigger thumb is: The most common conditon that leads to this.. In a trigger thmb the flexor tendon gets stuck as it tries to glide along the undersurface of the thumb to flex the ip joint. The tendon stops and the joint too. Often the stiffness is preceded by a period where there was clicking. Many times corticosteroid injections work well for this but surgery is needed too less often.

Trauma?: Blue green coloration might suggest bruising. If one of the joints doesn't bend - would recommend medical evaluation. Take care.

Behavior modificatio: By behavior modification i.e. If doesn't suck his thumb for one hour , give him a gold star .Gradually increase the time . After x amount of gold stars give him a little toy or present. Gradually over time he will give up the habit.

Apparently: There are many apparently. Sometimes it is a problem as it can cause great consternation. ( i would also not do it in a job interview.) there is the risk of developing an overbite requiring braces to repair it.  There is some evidence that if not outgrown it can lead to overeating and even smoking. (cigaretts not digits).
