No & No: We often tell our patients to skip sugar pills altogether & start next month's active birth control pills in order to manipulate their menses, say for honeymoon or vacation purposes. Some newer birth control pills don't even have sugar pills so you end up w/less frequent menses. But do remember that birth control pills won't prevent STDs - so make sure he wears a condom each time!

Maybe (not) . . .: Ok from what? Sexually transmitted disease? No. Pregnancy? Probably. But it's better to take birth control pills as directed rather than depend upon morning after pills. So if it's difficult to take pills regularly, ask your family doctor for other options eg shots, patches, etc.

i've been on loestrin 30 for several years. i'm currently on my 2nd pill of a new pack. after unprotected sex do i need to take a morning after pill?

No: No you don't as long as you take the pill as directed the chance of pregnancy is very slim. You should however use condoms to protect against std's. Take care!

Plan B: Anyone having intercourse without birth control or condoms may get pregnant. If intercourse was within 72 hours you consider taking plan b. Ella (ulipristal acetate) is another brand that can be used up to 5 days after unprotected intercourse. Plan b is a high dose of birth control to disrupt the hormonal patterns to delay or prevent ovulation. Abnormal bleeding after is common. Check  preg test in 10 days.

i had unprotected sex last night and i want to know if i can use yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) as a morning after pill?  there are no pharmacies here! please help

Yes,it's worth a try: Double up on your Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol)  pills x 3 days. It may work to prevent implantation. If not, run a pregnancy test at the end of this pack of pills to know if you are pregnant.

Maybe, maybe not: It may or may not prevent conception because sperm can be viable up to 7 days in the female genital tract under favorable conditions. Contraception, in the future, works better than the "morning after pill".

It can happen: Plan B (and other "morning after" pills) can alter the menstrual bleeding for the cycle in which Plan B was taken, and sometimes in the next cycle too. One should be sure to check a home pregnancy test about 3 weeks after sex, because emergency contraceptive pills work most of the time, but not all the time.

No: If you've been on for two weeks you already have more protection from pregnancy than the morning after pill would give you.

Accepted Answer

Late period: First of all, a man does not have to finish to achieve pregnancy.  There is sperm in the preejaculate so pregnancy is possible.  If you are late and cramping, i would take a pregnancy test.

my ovulation window was june 15-20. had unprotected sex on june 19th. took the morning after pill about 16 hours later. should i be worried ?

Prevention/cure: There is an old adage, that "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." The morning after pill may work but contraception is more of a "sure thing". Consider it if this is not a  viable pregnancy.
