If this is a recurring problem you should be evaluated. Infections ;  hormonal changes can cause spotting. If there is a concern for pregnancy then do  a home pregnancy test . Multiple things can affect a woman's cycle including hormonal changes, stress, weight changes, pregnancy, structures in or on the uterus and cervix, etc.  The majority of causes are benign.  Your cycle may regulate back out on its own.  If it doesn't I recommend that you see your gyn to be evaluated and discuss management options.
