Oral herpes: Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) infection is extremely common; up to half of all people in the US have it. Most infections cause few or no symptoms, but many get recurrent oral herpes ("cold sores", usually blister- or pimple-like, usually on lips, around nose, etc). Canker sores in the mouth are not cold sores and not herpes. A blood test can detect HSV1, but it's not perfect -- misses 30%.

Not my field, but...: It is theorized that some cold sores may be caused by a mutation of normal oral bacteria to their "L-form."  Some will spontaneously mutate back, or they will just die off in time.  At the same time it can also be herpes simplex.  A good ENT doctor can help you.

Hepes type 1: Herpes type 1 usually causes cold sores, or fever blisters, but can cause genital herpes.Usually type 1 virus does not like the genital area and chances of it coming back are much less than type2.But there is still a little cance as you just had it.

Yes: An estimated 80% of Americans have been exposed to Herpes Simplex Virus type 1. However, not all of those people will get cold sores.  It depends on your immune system.

Depends: It depends on what type of activity you engage in. Herpes virus is spread from skin to skin.If you don't want to spread it, avoid bringing it into contact with any area that would be at risk.There are a variety of things you can do during sex that share pleasure without exposure. Think it through.

Not necessarily: Herpes simplex virus 1 hangs out in the trigeminal ganglion (near the ear). Outbreaks "usually" occur-mouth/face. Hsv 2 usually locates itself in the sacral ganglion (at lower spine). Outbreaks "usually" occur-genital area. The difference is "not always absolute"-either can reside in either or both parts of the body & infect orally/genitally. Viral culture, blood test, PCR can diagnose herpes type.

i kissed someone with what i thought was a pimple but now know was a cold sore. does that automatically mean i have herpes? and will i for sure get outbreaks if i do?

: Oral and genital herpes virus is spread easily by oral or genital contact with someone with an active herpes ulcer.  The virus is attached to the nucleus of cells, and severe stress from any source can activate the virus, causing typical ulcers.  If you begin to have episodes with ulcers, ask your physician about antivirals like acyclovir or Valtrex, which can alleviate active virus.
